Welcome to New Dawn Yoga
Frequently Asked Questions
for Getting Started & Beyond
Q: Do you have an Intro Special?
A: Yes! It's 4 classes for only $20. These credits expire after 1 month and we do not offer extensions on intro special credits. This lets you have a chance to try various class styles and instructors to get a feel for what New Dawn offers. Here is the link to our Intro Special!
Q: I want to talk to someone & ask some questions/get some help with starting my practice. Who should I call/text/email?
A: You can call or text the studio owner, Anna, at 319-415-5650. Please note this is also her personal number, and one she utilizes for her other business as well. She won't know exactly why you're calling until you share! Please call between the hours of 9am-8pm. If she doesn't answer, she will call you back if you leave a voicemail or send a text. You can also email support@newdawnhotyoga.com or fill out the contact form at the bottom of this page.
Q: Do I bring my own mat & mat towel?
A: You can if you'd like! For your first visit with us, you get a free mat & mat towel rental (normally $3 for the pair). We offer sweat towels at no cost. Rented mat towels and sweat towels should be placed in the laundry hamper right outside of the studio room after class for washing.
Q: What will attending my first class look like?
A: Please try to arrive at least 5 minutes early for class. Upon arrival, please take off your shoes & keep them placed on the rug. You'll check in at the desk. If you don't already have a yoga mat & mat towel, we will offer you a free rental for your first visit. Some types of mats need a mat towel for hot yoga - others don't.
You'll place all of your belongings in the cubbies in the hallway. We lock the door during class so your belongings are safe.
You'll take your yoga mat, mat towel (if applicable), and water into the studio room with you. You might want to grab a "face mopping towel" at the end of the hallway, or inside the studio room. You might want to grab 1-2 blocks, knowing you'll need to spray/wipe them down after class if you grab them from the shelf.
You'll find a spot in the front, middle, or back row. If it's busy, feel free to ask your neighbors to make room for you or ask the instructor for help finding a spot. You can sit or lay down before class, or gently stretch. Please honor the shared space by speaking softly or practicing silence before class. After class, please save quiet conversations for the hallway as we allow meditation for up to 10 minutes after class.
During class we invite you to follow the cues that honor your body, while finding variations or rest when the cues aren't for you that day. We always encourage people to listen inward & to not force themselves into a posture they are not ready for. There's a difference between meeting a challenge and pushing past your limits - doing the latter could lead to injury - so don't do it! If you need a break from the heat, please feel free to take a break out in the hallway, but know the instructor might come out to check on you! It's all out of care. <3
At the end of class, if it's hot, we will offer you a cool peppermint towel. If you don't want one, feel free to let your instructor know in the moment.
After class, feel free to ask the instructor any questions that came up for you. Just like trying anything for the first time, it might take a few times to start to "get" it. Give yourself patience and grace. You're in great company while doing so.
Q: When does the studio open/close?
A: The studio opens 15 minutes before each class. The studio closes 15 minutes after class.
Q: What should I wear?
A: Whatever you are most comfortable in! Depending on if you're attending a non hot, warm or hot class, you might dress a little differently. We have people dress in everything from flowy pants, sweats, leggings, athletic or yoga shorts, sports bras, long sleeve shirts - you name it. Men are allowed to be shirtless during heated classes. Typically tighter fitting clothing is most comfortable in hot classes, as baggy clothes feel heavy once sweaty.
Q: Do I need to make an account ahead of time with Glofox?
A: Not necessarily! If you don't have an account made, you're welcome to pay with cash or card upon your arrival, but will be limited to our single drop in price. Please make an account when you're ready to commit with our Intro Special, credit pack or unlimited membership. The Intro Special is linked at the top of this page. If you have any trouble making an account, we are happy to help at the studio.
Q: What's the easiest way to make an account and sign up for class?
A: Although many people sign up through Glofox on our website, the easiest way to sign up for class (& cancel out of class if you can no longer attend) is through our app. Here's the links for Apple and Android.
Q: Can I wear socks?
A: Most people practice yoga barefoot. If you want to wear socks you definitely can, but they'll probably get wet during a hot class! We recommend yoga grip socks if you'd like to practice with socks regularly. We also have people who like to wear socks into the studio room, taking them off as they step onto their mat. It's all personal preference - you do you! The studio floors are cleaned regularly.
Q: Can I look at others in the room during class?
A: It depends on the intention. Looking to inform you practice is a great intention. Looking just to look or judge others is not. If possible, allow the instructor's cues & physical practice to inform you first. If you don't have great hearing, a good view of their mat, or your instructor is stepping off their mat, it's completely reasonable to look at those around you for guidance. New Dawn is a safe space for women, men, and those on the non-binary spectrum to feel at home in their bodies without feeling like someone is watching them. Please keep eyes on your own practice unless the intention is purely educational. You'll also get a lot more out of your practice by focusing on your own body and breath. Yoga postures are much more about how they feel than how they look. That being said - we all started somewhere & even our long time practitioners remember when they needed to look at their neighbors for help! Intention matters.
Q: Can I bring my phone into the studio room?
A: Unless absolutely needed (perhaps you are on-call, have kids alone at home, or need to track blood sugars) please do not bring your phone into the studio space as it's distracting to those around you. Even seeing a phone makes others think about theirs! This is your time to unplug!
Please silence your phone & remove any alarms that would go off during class. Depending on your notification volume, it might be heard from the studio room.
If you need to bring your phone in, please let your instructor know. We do not allow any recordings (voice or video) or pictures during class. If you're wanting to make a video, please reach out to Anna and we can find a time to allow you into the space outside of normal class times.
Q: Will I be photographed or videoed by my instructor during a normal class?
A: No. We will never photograph or video you during a normally scheduled class. Nearly all the images you see of people practicing yoga on our socials are taken during photoshoot classes that do not appear on our regular schedule. We do not allow students to record or take pictures in the studio space either.
Why?
In a world where it can feel like you're constantly on display, we want our space to feel like a relief. We strive for our space to feel completely non-performative - a place to simply be. At New Dawn, you will never be photographed during our normal classes. You'll never be photographed during special, donation-based themed classes without clear consent ahead of time & an option to not participate in the picture(s), as they'll never take more than 2-3 minutes. You will never be surprise photographed or videoed unknowingly with your eyes closed in shavasana.
If you notice a fellow student in the room setting up their phone to record, please alert the instructor or kindly let them know that recording is not allowed in our space. They likely just don't know the rules! See question above for more details about phones at the studio.
Q: I forgot my water or xyz - what should I do?
A: If you mean you forgot to fill your water bottle, we do have a culligan water cooler around the corner in the hallway! If you forgot your bottle altogether, we offer free bottled waters. We try to create as little waste as possible, so please try to not make a habit of our free waters! That being said - we never want someone to be without water for their hot yoga practice. We offer mat & towel rentals as well as free water bottles & spray deodorant in hopes that if you forgot your "yoga stuff" at home, as long as you have clothes to sweat in, you can still attend practice with us.
Q: Can I get an extension if I didn't use all of my credits before their expiration date?
A: Outside of our intro special credits (because of their incredibly low price), we nearly always grant an extension on credit expirations. If they expire twice, we ask that you purchase another credit pack (5, 10 or 15) & we will add the expired credits to the new pack's expiration date. Our credit packs have a 6 month expiration. Please reach out to support@newdawnhotyoga.com with any extension requests.
Q: I'm running late to class. What should I do?
A: The instructor locks the door at the class start time, then begins class shortly after. We welcome you to buzz in right at class start time, but if you need to use the restroom or change, please lay out your mat first so you have a spot to go to if the instructor begins class before you're ready to join. If you're running a little late, you're always welcome to try the door. If it's locked, please do not knock as it will disturb beginning shavasana. Your instructor will hear the door "clunk" if they are still in the hallway & will walk up to let you in.
Q: I need to leave right at class end time or even a little before - what should I do?
A: Sometimes, class runs just a little past schedule. Consider checking in with the instructor so they know you'll be leaving right on time or a little early - different instructors struggle less with ending class perfectly on time than others, so checking in is best! You may want to consider rolling up your mat when the instructor leaves to get cool towels. This way you leave before shavasana meditation truly starts and aren't distracting your neighbors during this quiet, meditative time.
Q: How & how often do you wash your equipment?
A: Our studio floor is vacuumed and mopped nightly by our little robot that lives under our block shelves. We use Mrs Meyer's cleaner on our studio room floor, as well as our bathrooms/other surfaces.
Our yin bolster covers are washed quarterly (they are only used 1-2x per week.) During warm classes we ask that you use the blanket, a yoga mat towel or hand towels to protect them if you're sweaty.
Our yin blankets are washed monthly - but if you cough, sneeze, or sweat profusely onto your blanket, please place it in the laundry basket after class. If a blanket is damp, it should not be rolled up for reuse at the end of class.
Each time you use a block or rental mat, it is expected that you spray it down and wipe it off with our mat/block cleaner on the block shelves in the studio room. We also wash these ourselves quarterly.
All towels are single use - please place them in the hamper outside the studio door after class. We use naturally scented laundry detergent: Num, the sea salt scent, from Natural Grocers.
